MISE-EN-DIOR EARRINGS. MY NEW FASHION LOVE THANG.

Posted by Melanie Rickey, Fashion Editor at large

You'll have to bear with me while I get back into the fast lane of writing on here. I've been
trundling along on a happy sabbatical from covering fashion since having my son Horatio just
over a year ago. As a result I have become a fashion spectator, detachedly gazing at the river
of information, trends and happenings as they bob on by, and revelling in my cut-off from the
catwalks state. No more. My inner professional and outward fashionista is clawing to get back
on the beat, and here I am with the Haute Couture going on in Paris, with a relatively done
story, but one that I nonetheless need to write about.

I LOVE these earrings. This fact in itself makes me feel good. I'd forgotten what it felt like to have
an irrational crush on a fashion thing that I will make great efforts to own. The slight shame in this
(and all new mothers will attest to this time lag in knowledge), they first came out LAST
JUNE.

But here you have it; a double bauble, or as the French would have it 'asymmetric boules' inspired
by tribal piercings (a bit like what I see coming out of my local tattoo parlour in Camden Lock
speared through someones outsize lobe) the smaller orb sits at the front. Essentially, these are
virginal pearl stud earrings for the good girl gone a tiny bit bad.

They were initially part of Christian Dior's pre-fall costume jewellery collection for 2013, and
were created not by Raf Simons but the fab Dior accessories designer Camille Miceli.

Where I don't feel slightly pink-cheeked about my lateness to this game, is that these little power
boules are currently in the thick of their own bestselling fashion moment. In December, following a
further delivery of multiple colours added to the range at retail, and dovetailing with the trend for
wearing single dramatic ear-cuffs, and the other for asymmetric hair styling (see Kristin Stewart,
Lena Dunham at 40 seconds), they sold out across Europe. And I'm not just saying
that, the woman at Dior on Sloane Street told me not ten minutes ago that "the colours are sold
out across Europe, but we have the white ones - shall I put a pair aside for you?" I would like the monochrome pair just below these words.

Hopefully I will get them for my birthday. Or self-gift. Whatever it takes!

It's good to be writing. I'll be back again soon. In the meantime enjoy the baubles. The pair below
cost £290; the colourful ones cost £260 . Check out more at Dior.com.

THE BEST AD CAMPAIGNS OF SS14

Posted by Bethan Holt and Maya Peilow

It's been a busy few weeks for SS14 campaign releases with a plenty of actually-quite-interesting fashion stories emerging as a result. There's been more progress on the use of black models, controversial photographer fallings out, hilarious poses and then just a lot of the usual fabulousness. Here's a round-up of the best so far...

CELINE

The shoot which Juergen Teller did want to do (see below). After all the fuss about her SS14 collection signalling the death of minimalism, Phoebe Philo seems to be saying that we can have it either way. There's the busy, colourful image which stars Julia Nobis which is a. a bit of a departure from the usual Daria only shots and b. so stacked with things to draw the eye- paint splattered dresses, photo bombing other figure, shiny bangles- that it's hard to know where to look. Then as a palette- cleansing alternative we have Daria Werbowy in a simple architectural black coat just staring at the camera. Clever.

CHANEL

Chanel’s campaign features its biggest hits from the multicoloured, art-inspired SS14 collection. It includes the most buzzed about items from the catwalk; that pearl, headphone-like necklace and the shoes with built in socks. Photographed by Karl Lagerfeld, Lindsey Wixson, in her second Chanel campaign, and newcomer Sasha Luss were cast for the job. Aside from the choppy haircuts and a few bright colours, these images are full of classically Chanel bows and pearls, plus Karl's old trick of wearing a few handbags at a time. It's very "buy-me". We're after the little black hair bow.

CHLOE

Chloe’s campaign, shot by Inez and Vinoodh, features singer Lou Doillon and model Julia Stegner. The vibe of this campaign is something like… Brigitte Bardot and her brunette friend run wild on a farm in some lovely clothes. Don't you just want to BE them?

ALEXANDER WANG

The Alexander Wang SS14 campaign may have been shot at a nightclub near you, it certainly looks that way anyway. This cheeky Steven Klein photography features Anna Ewers draped across a sink wearing the parental advisory label top which became one of the defining items of the SS14 fashion month. The second image glamorises loo visits as nothing has ever done before, even if there are no clothes in the frame. Wang told WWD he wanted the campaign to follow on from the “duality of naïveté and perverse explicitness in youth culture” which was a key feature of the SS14 collection. He added, “I loved blurring the lines between censorship and humour." We love it when you do that too Mr Wang.

DIOR

To showcase his rather personal collection for Dior, Raf Simons recruited a top cast, featuring Stella Tennant, Edie Campbell, Elise Crombez and Julia Nobis. These edgy girls offset against the pale blue sky with haunting blackbirds flying in the background help to recreate that slightly dark element which was resonant at the show- remember the dripping flowers?  The campaign is once again shot by Willy Vanderperre.

 MARC JACOBS

Last year, Miley sparked controversy wherever she went and whatever she did. Her starring role in the Marc Jacobs SS14 campaign is no exception. Juergen Teller, who has been photographing Marc Jacobs campaigns for years, refused to shoot thecontroversial star. The new campaign was photographed by David Sims, who shot Jacobs’ beauty campaign. As a result of this photographer switch, the whole mood of Marc's imagery has changed with just as much focus on that post-apocalyptic beach landscape as on Miley herself. In the run to going public, perhaps that was actually part of the intention.

 MIU MIU

Miu Miu’s colourful SS14 campaign features Hollywood’s rising stars: Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Patsey in ‘12 Years A Slave’ and is nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress; Elle Fanning, from ‘Phoebe in Wonderland’ and ‘Super 8’; Elizabeth Olsen, from ‘Silent House’ and ‘Liberal Arts’ and Bella Heathcote from ‘Dark Shadows’. This casting follows Miu Miu's usual practice over recent years of casting up-and-coming actresses. Previous campaigns have included Léa Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulous who starred in one of last year’s most talked about films, ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour.’ Photographed by Inez and Vinoodh, this campaign will have you rushing out for some coloured tights and we basically want Lupita's whole look. The brand has faced some criticism for casting Elle, who is only 15 years old, following a tightening of regulations for underage models.

PRADA

Photographed by Steven Meisel, Prada’s SS14 campaign is what we wish our class or sports team photos looked like at school. The collage-like set up photography shows off the art theme of the collection in a nicely triply way. . The inclusion of Malaika Firth and Cindy Bruna has been praised for addressing the lack of diversity in the fashion industry. After all, Malaika’s appearance in the AW13 collection in September marked the first use of a black model by Prada since Naomi Campbell in 1994.

 VALENTINO

British model Malaika Firth stars in the Valentino SS14 campaign. Having opened and closed the show in September last year, this casting isn’t particularly surprising. Draped in red lace and adorned with gold jewellery and headband, Malaika looks a Princess from a faraway fairytale land.
