THE WEEK IN FASHION: JULY 22nd-26th

Posted by Bethan Holt, Junior Fashion Editor at Large

Prince George may have dominated the headlines this week but it's actually been a pretty eventful week in the wonderful world of fashion. Your catch-up starts here.

The latest twist in Dolce and Gabbana's tax evasion saga was the closure of their Milan stores in a 3-day protest last weekend. This came in response to Franco D'Alfonso, a Milan city councillor, who alluded to their guilty verdict in comments he made to press. Explanatory 'Closed for Indignation' notices were put up in the windows of the 9 Milan stores which ceased trading. It emerged this week that the case could have severe consequences for the label. Dolce and Gabbana told Local paper that they would close the business if the verdict is upheld.

Christopher Kane appointed a new CEO this week. Alexandre de Brettes will join from Kering, which owns a 51% stake in Kane's label, where he was formerly Financial Communications and Market Intelligence Director. The move means that Christopher and his sister, Tammy, can concentrate on creative development which we can but pray will mean a diffusion line, shoes, bags, perfumes....

Oh Lordy it's already begun. After spending less than 3 minutes in public view, baby Prince George is already looking like he might just as much of a style influencer as his Mum. Even though we didn't actually see any of his clothes, the blanket in which he was wrapped for his journey home (by Aden and Anais) sold out within hours, of course.

Following his recent spat with Tim Blanks after a less than favourable Style.com write-up, Jean Paul Gaultier was due some good press. And what could be lovelier than designing a wedding dress for Beth Ditto's wedding to girlfriend Kristen Ogata. If there's one way to remind Blanks what you're really all about then this had to be it. Go Gaultier, Go Beth.

Cora Honeysuckle CorrĂ© has made her modelling debut in the latest issue of LOVE magazine. The 16 year-old is the daughter of Agent Provocatueur founders Serena Rees and Joe CorrĂ© and the granddaughter of Vivienne Westwood. This is definitely no story of accidental "on the street" discovery. LOVE's Editor-in-Chief, Katie Grand, is a good friend of the family and just got Cora and her mates to mess around applying their make up for the shoot, casual like. If only all my teenage dressing up had culminated in fancy magazine shoots. Or not.

The last surviving member of JFK's immediate family, his daughter Caroline, has been nominated by President Obama as Ambassador to Japan. This is obviously a key political appointment but it will also be interesting fashion wise, as Vanessa Friedman explains. Kennedy might not be Anna Wintour ( who was at one stage rumoured to be taking up the same position in London) but the prospect of her potential American-Japanese wardrobe is bound to be fascinating to watch, Comme plus Calvin anyone?

There's a stellar line up for this year's Dorchester Fashion Prize. The nominees are...

How would you choose? Whoever wins will receive £25,000 for their business plus mentoring from the highly expert panel of judges which includes Caroline Issa, Stephen Jones and Daniella Helayel. The winner will be announced at a presentation on 29th October.

Behold, Jonathan Saunders and Roksanda Ilincic are opening a pop-up outlet store from next Wednesday. Good job it's pay day.

Finally, it looks like today might be the last day of the heatwave. To mark the momentous occasion, have a watch of All Saints' latest video. Watch right until the end. Happy Weekend.

THE WEEK IN FASHION: JUNE 17th to 21st

Posted by Bethan Holt, Junior Fashion Editor at Large

Happy Fashion News Day! And Friday. Here's everything you need to know before weekend time. Listen up.

There was a point on Wednesday afternoon when lots of us thought that Dolce and Gabbana were off to prison. Technically, they have been sentenced to 20 months each for tax evasion. However, such is the Italian legal system that they probably won't ever actually end up behind bars. The Telegraph have the company's full statement here. So, those making hilarious references to the next collection being "all about stripes", it looks like you'll be disappointed.

The week's most controversial story was Vice's suicidal writers photo shoot. In an unbelievable new low for "fashion" photography, the death scenes of writers including Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath and Iris Change were recreated with the models' outfits credited. Never Underdressed's Harriet Walker summed up the whole business perfectly. Vice have now removed the shoot from their website. Fashionista threw extra light on the story when they got a chance to chat with one of the models in the shoot.

Not men's fashion week, but the G8 conference. David Cameron decreed a smart casual dress code for the gathering of political leaders in Ireland. "Smart casual" translates, it seems to "your usual, without the tie". The Presidents and Prime Ministers were also treated to Mulberry bags, specially embossed with their individual initials. I wonder if there were ties in the bags?

Nicolas Ghesquière's departure from Balenciaga got a little bit messier this week. Following his revealing interview with System magazine, the designer's former employers, Kering, are apparently suing him for of "breach of duty of confidentiality". In other news, here is something from Ghesquière's final collection, available to buy now.

Meanwhile, Raf Simons is taking his new Dior role beyond the fashion arena. It was announced this morning that Dior will sponsor New York's Guggenheim museum's International Gala in November. Over two days, Simons will host several parties, dinners and performances to honour artists Christopher Wool and James Turrell. Simons is known to be an avid art collector so this is very likely to be the first of many forays into the art world.

Even though we can't see Tom Ford's new men's collection, there's one thing we can glean from the feedback of those who saw it. Tom is doing t-shirts. This means that he's probably still in his street fashion obsession phase which saw him base an entire collection on "Would Rihanna wear this?" for AW13.

Couturier Jean-Louis Scherrer has died in Paris at the age of 78. In his 60s and 70s heyday, Scherrer dressed the like of Jackie Kennedy and Sophia Loren.

Make sure you find time this weekend- if you haven't already- to listen to Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman's excellently selected Desert Island Discs which include Bowie's Drive In Saturday and We Three by Patti Smith. There are plenty of fun anecdotes and interesting thoughts which come out of her interview with Kirsty Young too. Listen here.

To top off the week's news, here are five looks from London Collections: Mens which I would quite like to wear myself... Happy Weekend.

IT'S TIME TO WEAR SS12 TRENDS!

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

One of the many oddities of working in fashion is that we get two chances to talk about trends. For Spring/Summer 2012, the first chance came in September/ October last year when designers were showing their collections for the forthcoming season, which is NOW. Meaning that the time has come to revisit and properly embrace what we saw seven months ago by actually buying into what we fell in love with on the catwalks - whether it's the designer real deal or the high street's interpretation.

As is the FEAL way, we told you what you'd be buying now as soon as we spotted it on the catwalk but that was a long time ago. We thought that you might like to look back at our first thoughts on SS12 now that we can all get in on the action...

GUIPURE

This trend was so huge we did two posts on it . Unsurprisingly, it's all over the high street. Our favourite is Jaeger Boutique's bright white, ribbon waisted dress. This would see you through all manner of Summer pursuits, just don't go rolling in the grass.

PRINTS AND PAISLEY

Print is still huge. Florals are a classic but if you want to be exactly on the SS12 pulse then a silky paisley or tropical jungle print are the ones to go for...

UNDER THE SEA

This one was never going to be easy to translate - who has time to encrust their spine with pearls each morning or carry about clusters of coral to work a trend? Nods to sea life with watery colours, embellishments and rope details seems like the most sensible way to channel the SS12 mermaid fantasy. Unless you have a fancy dress party coming up, in which case, go all out.

CROP TOPPING

A quick scout of the shops this weekend threw up plenty of evidence that crop tops are a trend pretty much every high street store has plumped for. We shared 8-minute abs with you at the time but really, who is actually ready for this? If you're not a 15 year old gymnast then maybe proceed with caution e.g a looser crop top worn over a high waist skirt/ short or under a skinny vest.

SEA AND SUN (YELLOW AND BLUE)

Two of the biggest colours for SS12. I am brightening up today in a Peeps colour jumper. The combination of the two, like wearing your very own seaside horizon, was done most brilliantly by Jonathan Saunders.
